History
I launched my book club in the summer of 2021, at Vittles (Grimsby) as part of my previous business Made in Grimsby & Cleethorpes. Over the years, the group has grown and evolved, and we currently meet on the 1st Sunday of every month at The Canopy, in Grant Thorold Park, in Grimsby. If you’re interested in joining a meeting, please read through the questions below and if there is anything else you would like to know, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Next Meeting: 3rd August 2025
There is NO MEETING in July, due to our annual Afternoon Tea. Therefore, our next meeting will be on 3rd August 2025. It also means that we are currently reading two books.
As of 5th January 2025, we meet for book club at The Canopy in Grant Thorold Park, in Grimsby.
Meetings take place on the first Sunday of each month. This might change sometimes due to varying reasons, so keep an eye on this page and my Instagram page for updates.
Sunday 3rd August 2025. Please Note: There is NO MEETING in July.
Book club always starts at 1pm and usually finishes at 2pm.
Absolutely, in fact, this is encouraged. I’ve been known to have a toastie, a sausage roll or a cake in past book club meetings.
However, don’t feel that you have to eat, sometimes we do and sometimes we don’t…it’s different for each of us.
The only thing I do request is please do try to at least support The Canopy by purchasing a drink 🙂
Since there is no book club in July, we are currently reading two books: Butter by Asako Yuzuki, and The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley.
We will discuss both at our August meeting, however they are both BIG books, so if you don’t manage to read both, that is absolutely fine (and understandable!)
I know some book clubs prefer it if you do, however I actually think there’s a big conversation to be had over why we don’t finish certain books. It’s actually rare that everyone has finished it each month. We all appreciate how busy lives are, alongside the fact that some book are just harder to read than others for a variety of reasons.
I would also be a huge hypocrite if I said you have to finish books, because I am notorious for not finishing them – however, I am currently on a good run for 2025, having read all but one book (made up by the fact that I used some spare time to catch up on a book I didn’t manage to finish in 2024!!)
I would recommend -however – that you at least attempt to read the first 100 pages.
That’s great, we are a group with very differing opinions and we’re more than open to healthy discussions.
Absolutely. You don’t need to let me know you’re coming. You are also more than welcome to sit and listen to gauge if our book club is right for you. Book clubs aren’t for everyone, so there’s no pressure or judgement here.
Nope, just yourself and some of us bring the book we’re reading, so that you can refer back to it if necessary. However, this is a choice and not an obligation.
Absolutely. This is highly encouraged.
We work together to choose the book we read each month, from a selection of suggested books from members.
We don’t have a Facebook Group, as I was keen to keep conversation off social media (I know a lot of people aren’t keen on social media!), however we do have a WhatsApp group
Feel free to contact me with your phone number if you would like to be added to the group to help you get to know other members of the Book Club prior to a meeting.
Of course. The more the merrier.
Me too. It’s only in the past couple of months that I’ve honestly stopped feeling anxious coming to every meeting.
If you have anxiety, I will do everything I can to make things easier for you, this could include (but is definitely not limited to):
- Meeting you earlierÂ
- Meeting you at the door so that you don’t have to come inside by yourself
- Â Advise where the toilets are
- Anything else that will help
Yes. Come into The Canopy, get yourself a drink and the room is right next to the counter, you’ll probably see us setting up the table and chairs 🙂
We have quite a wide age range spectrum, however the largest portion are aged between late 20s and early 40s.
Absolutely all age ranges are welcome.
Absolutely. James would love to have some more male company!
Nope. Book Club is 100% free. We\’re not about making money, we\’re about reading books, particularly ones we wouldn\’t have otherwise read, and to be more social.
All you need to pay for is any food or drinks from The Canopy that take your fancy.
